Most dashboards fail before the first chart is drawn. The team builds what the data allows, not what someone needs to decide.
Start with the question
Before you open a BI tool, write down the decision the dashboard should help someone make. If you can't name the person and the decision, stop.
- Who opens it, and how often?
- What will they do differently after looking?
- What number would make them act?
Keep it boring
A good dashboard is boring in the best way: the same place, the same time, the same three numbers. Novelty is for launch day.
If it needs a training session, it's not a dashboard. It's a puzzle.
